The Department of Basic Education (DBE), has published the matric results of the 2022 cohort. This group achieved a pass rate of 76%.

This is an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the 2020 matric pass rate of 76.2%. A total of 256,031 students received a Bachelor’s Degree pass and, with it, could be admitted to one of the country’s universities.

Motshekga reported that 36.4% achieved a bachelor’s degree (2020: 36.4%), while 25.2% earned a diploma (2020; 26%) and 14.8% obtained a higher certificate (2020, 13.7%).

The total number of candidates who took the 2022 NSC exam was 897,163, an increase of 23.6% over 2020. This number includes 733,198 full-time students, which is the largest full-time student cohort in the past few years. The examination was taken by 163,967 candidates who were part-time.

Check NSC Examination Results At Your School

The Department is encouraging learners to get their results from the schools or centres where they wrote their exams. (Call first to make sure they’re open). This is fun as classmates can gather around and celebrate or commiserate together. The certificate will be printed and posted only weeks later.

Check NSC Examination Results Via Newspapers

The results will be published in all major daily newspapers. You’ll need to know your exam number (no names are published). You won’t be able to see subject results, only whether it’s a pass, a Bachelors pass, etc.

Send an SMS

For state schools:
The Department of Basic Education and SABC Education have partnered again to offer instant results via SMS.
Register via SMS by sending your identity number followed by your exam number to 35658. After your registration has been successful you will receive a confirmation SMS. SMSs cost R1 (free SMSs don’t apply).

For IEB results:

Use the USSD service to Check NSC Examination Results

On the day that the results are released, dial *120*35658#. After answering multiple questions, you are required to enter your ID number. You’ll then receive your results per subject. You will have the option to opt in or out to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act. USSD rates apply.

Check NSC Examination Results 2023 Via IEB and DoBE websites

The IEB website will have the results from midnight Wednesday 2 January (Thursday morning). The Department of Basic Education’s website will publish the results from 6:00 on the day.

Have your exam number ready, and bear in mind that website traffic will be high, so expect delayed response times.

I was unsuccessful, what do I do now?

If you fail your Matric Results, you can consider rewriting the test. This is known as a supplemental exam.
Only candidates who have registered and written the November 2022 NSC examination may apply to write a supplementary examination.

Learners may register to write the examination if they:

  • failed to meet the requirements in the November examination;
  • passed but seek to improve their performance; or
  • were absent from the writing of one or more question papers due to ill health or other unforeseen circumstances.

Application forms will be available at schools offering NSC and on the WCED website. The deadline for applications for NSC supplementary examinations is is May/June.

Are you Unhappy With Your Results?

It is the goal of every grade 12 graduate to do well in these exams and make their families proud. The Matric Exam is important because it helps students get to higher education and work. Many students who have taken these exams are shaking as they await the announcement of their results.

Now you have checked your results and somehow you may not be happy with your matriculation results. You have until March of every year to request a re-mark, recheck, or see your exam papers.
